FNSSS00004 BAS Agent Registration Skill Set is a nationally recognised qualification ideal for bookkeepers and meets the education requirements of the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB) for BAS preparers, as outlined in the Tax Agent Services Act 2009. It is a TPB-approved course in basic GST and BAS taxation principles (GST/BAS course).

FNSSS00004 BAS Agent Registration Skill Set

The course is conducted via a combination of face-to-face and online learning with 4 weekly face-to-face classes (once a week). Classes run from 8.30 am to 4.30pm and are held at Applied Education, Level 1, 524 Hay Street, WA 6000. Located close to Perth Train Station.

Course Information

WA Government subsidies are available for this course. To be eligible under the Jobs and Skills WA - Skill Ready program, you must:

  1. attend all classes in Perth CBD;
  2. be living and working in Western Australia;
  3. have left school;
  4. be one of the following:
    • Australian citizen;
    • New Zealand citizen;
    • Permanent Resident; or

FNSSS00004 BAS Agent Registration Skill Set is assessed under the Principles of Competency-based training, students have to demonstrate their ability to do all activities in each Unit of Competency. There are 2 Units of Competency in this course.

  • FNSTPB411 Complete business activity and instalment activity statements (TPB Code: AEBA01 - GST Law and Activity Statements)
  • FNSTPB412 Establish and maintain payroll systems (TPB Code AEBA02 - Payroll Administration and Practice)

This course covers the Tax Agent Services Act (TASA) and Code of Professional Conduct.

The BAS Agent Registration course has a maximum duration of 6 months.

This course is delivered through a combination of face-to-face and online learning. 4 weekly classes, once a week. 

No formal prerequisites, however you must have basic understanding of bookkeeping and general computer skills including the use of Microsoft Word. 

This skill set is designed for persons who are seeking registration as a business activity statement (BAS) agent with the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB).

We understand that students study in different ways. For the TPB BAS Agent Course, we provide extensive learning material and resources:

  • Digital course training manuals (non-editable and non-printable) for each unit of competency
  • Video tutorials for some units covering key learning concepts

All course content, including assessments, is accessed via our online student portal.

If required, hard copy manuals can be purchased at additional cost.

  • FNSTPB412 (MYOB only version) is purchased directly from Applied Education ($80 incl postage).
  • FNSTPB411 (Xero only version) is purchased from an external publisher, full details are provided on enrolment (approx. $80 ex postage)

Overview

Your learning journey is about becoming "competent" in the subject matter. Our expert in-house training and assessment team have comprehensive bookkeeping, accounting and business experience or are currently working in the industry. With this in mind, we aim to make the tasks relevant to what you will experience in the real world. The purpose is not to pass or fail, rather to become competent using these skills which you can then apply in your professional career.

As FNSSS00004 BAS Agent Registration Skill Set is a nationally recognised course, there are some mandatory requirements* that must be completed by all RTO students.

Pre-course

Before starting this course, you may be required to complete a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) assessment* which is used to determine your skill level so that we can best support you in your studies.

Introductory Assessments

There are two Introduction Assessments, a Work Health and Safety Assessment* and a Foundation Skills Assessment* with includes oral communication.

Unit Assessments

All assessments must be completed within your course duration period.

The unit assessments are completed using a variety of methods and are submitted via our online student portal. They are open book, from either your home, office, or classroom, and comprise theoretical and practical exercises.

BAS units require the use of accounting software, Xero and MYOB (access to software included). For practical assessments:

  • FNSTPB411 Complete business activity and instalment activity statements is using Xero Accounting Software.
  • FNSTPB412 Establish and maintain payroll systems is using MYOB Accounting Software.

Tax Practitioners Board Licensing Course units include an assessment component which needs to be independently supervised. A supervised assessment is an open-book assessment with a maximum duration of 3 hours and comprise of short answer and multiple-choice questions. Supervised assessments are included in face-to-face classes.

To complete this course, you will need the following:

  • A reliable internet connection at home to complete assessments as all data files and learning activities are available via our student platform. Free WIFI is provided during face-to-face classes.
  • Microsoft Word to access assessment files.
  • Your own laptop or learning device for face-to-face learning that is using a;
  • Windows operating system.*

Xero and MYOB

You can use any operating system including Mac or Windows if choosing to complete the course using Xero Software. We provide the link and detailed instruction to log in to the Xero Learn platform.

We also provide a link and detailed instructions to download MYOB software to your computer.

*Apple device or Macbook users

MYOB may NOT be compatible with Apple devices, tablets or Chromebooks. If you only have access to a Mac computer, and wish to use MYOB, we recommend you first contact Apple to confirm if the following options are feasible on your computer:

  • purchase and install on your mac a windows emulator such as "parallels" to run windows on a Mac at your own cost; or
  • use the free inbuilt Mac Boot Camp Assistant on your Mac computer and purchase a Windows OS software licence. 

Note: Applied Education and MYOB are unable to support issues relating to a Mac computer.
