Xero accounts payable and accounts receivable - What you will learn

Xero accounts payable and accounts receivable

What distinguishes accounts receivable from accounts payable?

Who owes money is the primary distinction between accounts payable and accounts receivable. Accounts payable deals with the cash you owe suppliers and vendors for costs incurred by your business. On your balance sheet, these accounts are often treated as recurring current liabilities.

The money your clients owe you for your goods and services is known as accounts receivable. They appear on balance sheets and other accounting reports as a current asset.

Why are accounts receivable and payable important?

Accounts payable and receivable make ensuring the company has enough money flowing in to pay its bills and, ideally, have money left over. You can't effectively manage your cash flow if you don't keep track of your payables and receivables.

Managing both types of accounts enables you to plan your spending for foreseeable expenses, identify opportunities to negotiate better prices with vendors and suppliers, and encourage clients to pay their bills more quickly. Additionally, it helps speed up the process of collecting past-due accounts. You don't think cash flow management is crucial? Approximately 80% of business failures are the result of poor cash flow management.
