Whether due to the cost-of-living crisis or that the traditional path to university was not for you, did you know that a diploma-level qualification is a successful pathway to university entry?

For many young adults, the traditional path to a bachelor's degree may not have been the right fit. Whether due to academic challenges, personal circumstances, or other factors, not everyone finds success in the conventional school system. However, this doesn't mean that higher education is out of reach. One viable and rewarding alternative is pursuing a Diploma of Accounting as a stepping stone to a bachelor’s degree.

1. Practical Skills and Knowledge

The curriculum of the Diploma of Accounting is designed to provide practical, job-ready skills that are directly applicable to the workplace. This can be a significant advantage for those who want to gain employment quickly and build a foundation for their career.

FNS50222 Diploma of Accounting meets all education requirements for BAS Agent registration and meets the minimum education requirements for Tax Agent registration. At Applied Education, we offer enrolment choices depending on students' career pathways, they can choose to study units that are relevant to taxation accounting and are approved by the Tax Practitioners Board for Tax Agent registration.

2. Cost-Effective

The cost of a diploma qualification is generally significantly lower than that of an undergraduate degree.

In 2021, the federal government made significant changes to the way it funded universities for Australian students and there was a significant rise in the fees for students wishing to study commerce and business. In Western Australia, the indicative fees of a Bachelor of Commerce at a university start at $16,000 per annum in 2024.  This makes a Diploma of Accounting between $2300 and $3500 at an attractive option for those who are budget-conscious or who want to minimize student debt.

3. Flexible Study Options

Many RTO's offer flexible study options, including in-classroom, hybrid and online learning. This is ideal for those who need to balance their studies with other commitments and find a course delivery option that best suits their learning style.

4. Shorter Duration

Compared to a bachelor's degree, a diploma can be completed in a shorter time frame. At Applied Education the duration of a Diploma of Accounting is between 12 and 18 months depending on the units you choose to study. This allows students to enter the workforce sooner and start gaining valuable experience.

4. Pathway to Further Studies

On completion of the Diploma of Accounting, you can continue further studies to:

FNS60222 Advanced Diploma of Accounting
On completion of the Diploma of Accounting, you will meet the entry requirements to FNS60222 Advanced Diploma of Accounting and will only need to complete up to 7 units of competency to attain the Advanced Diploma.

Bachelor of Commerce or Business
The Diploma of Accounting is a nationally recognised qualification and most universities offer credits towards a Bachelor's degree. Gaining credits can reduce both the time and cost of a Bachelor of Commerce.

For Curtin University, in WA, on successful completion of FNS50222 Diploma of Accounting you can receive up to 125 credit points for admission into the Bachelor of Commerce. More information is available on the Curtin website at https://www.curtin.edu.au/study/applying/pathways/tafe-vet/
