You may be surprised to know that the path to becoming a registered BAS or Tax Agent is not as arduous as is often thought. It is simply a case of attaining the relevant experience and suitable qualifications.

WHAT ARE THE BAS AGENT REQUIREMENTS?
In order to become a registered BAS Agent there is a need to meet two key criteria.
Qualification: Am I Qualified?
The qualification needed to become a BAS Agent is a Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping, or higher and
Successfully completed a Board approved course in basic GST/BAS taxation principles (which may be included in the above certificate). The units for such a course are:
FNSBKG404A Carry out business activity and instalment activity statement tasks
FNSBKG405A Establish and maintain a payroll system.
Do You Have Relevant Experience?
When applying to register or renew registration as an individual BAS agent, there is a need to meet a minimum number of hours of relevant experience in providing BAS services.
This work experience can include:
Working as as a registered Tax or BAS agent.
Working under the supervision and control of a registered tax or BAS agent
Other kind of work approved by the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB)
The amount of relevant experience needed to be demonstrated for registration as BAS agent can either be 1,400 hours in the past four years, or 1,000 hours in the past four years the applicant is voting member of recognised BAS or tax agent association.

WHAT ARE THE TAX AGENT REQUIREMENTS?
The requirements to become a Tax Agent are also based on a combination of required qualification and experience which are set out in the Tax Agent Services Regulations 2009 (TASR).
Qualification: Am I Qualified?
The minimum qualification needed to become a Tax Agent is a Diploma in Accounting or higher and the completion of a board approved course in Australian Tax Law and Commercial Law. Â Typically the course in Australian Tax Law and Commercial is comprised of two and three units respectively which can comprise of variety approved topics.
Do You Have Relevant Experience?
If applying to register or renew registration as an individual Tax Agent, there is also the need to have sufficient relevant experience in providing Tax Agent Services.
Relevant experience can include:
Working as registered Tax Agent
Working under the supervision and control of a registered Tax Agent
Undertaking tax work as a legal practitioner
Other kind of relevant work approved by the TPB
In most instances the amount of relevant experience needed will vary depending on the underlying qualification. It can vary from twelve month up to two years.
